Changing the Electrolyte Solution in the Hydroflux Welding Machine
Learn how to efficiently and safely change the electrolyte solution in your Hydroflux welding machine with these simple directions.
Depending on the type and frequency of your soldering tasks, the electrolyte solution in your Hydroflux welding machine could last up to one year. We recommend changing the electrolyte at least once a year, and more often should your needs dictate, to keep the Hydroflux welding machine providing you its best performance.
Please Note: When changing the electrolyte, the flux solution and filter material also must be changed.

You will know the electrolyte needs to be changed when:
• The flame becomes weaker than you're used to.
• The pressure drops below what's normal for you.
• The machine stops generating gas.

YOU WILL NEED:
• 1 quart of electrolyte (500223)
• Clean filter material (500203)
• Fresh flux (500222)
• Replacement rear check-valve
• A pair of protective glasses or goggles
• Rubber gloves and apron
• A drop-cloth or safe work area
• A large syringe (or simple kitchen turkey-baster)
• A plastic bucket
• A plastic funnel
• Paper towels
• Warm distilled water

CAUTION! Electrolyte, though it is odorless and colorless, is highly caustic and should always be handled using protective equipment such as rubber gloves, apron, and safety glasses or goggles. When handling the electrolyte solution, take care to avoid spills. The electrolyte mix (or solution) destroys human skin on contact. In addition, it may damage any finished surfaces, clothing, etc., and is highly corrosive to many metals, including copper, brass, zinc and aluminum. IMPORTANT: Electrolyte reacts violently with acids; keep any acids well away.

Step 1
Unplug the Hydroflux welding machine and set it on your drop-cloth or in your safe working area. Put on all protective equipment.
Step 2
Remove all caps from the Hydroflux welding machine.
Step 3
Use the syringe (or turkey baster) to remove all flux and discard in accordance with all applicable local regulations. Wipe the inside of the chamber dry using paper towels.
Step 4
Remove all dryer filter material and discard in accordance with all applicable local regulations. If there is any moisture in the dryer chamber, use the syringe to suction it out and wipe the chamber dry with paper towels.
Step 5
Place the plastic bucket under the drain plug. Position the bucket close enough to prevent splashing. The electrolyte is a highly caustic material. Read, understand and follow all directives for safety and health precautions in the MSDS available for this product.
Step 6
IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT THAT YOU WEAR YOUR APRON, GLOVES AND SAFETY GLASSES DURING THIS STEP! ELECTROLYTE IS HIGHLY CAUSTIC AND WILL IMMEDIATELY DAMAGE YOUR SKIN. With a wrench or pliers, loosen the drain plug. After a few turns, it should be only finger-tight. Remove the plug. Take care to ensure that the plug does not fall into the bucket.
Step 7
Allow the chamber to drain. The electrolyte should be a muddy-brown to black in color. Your can tip the unit slightly to facilitate draining.
Step 8
With the drain still open, slowly pour approximately one quart of warm, distilled water through the electrolyte chamber. Allow it to run through the unit and into the bucket. Repeat until the water is reasonably clear.
Step 9
Replace the drain plug and finger-tighten. Then turn the plug an additional 1/4-turn with the wrench. NOTE: The drain plug O-ring can be damaged easily if the plug is too tight.
Step 10
Remove the cover of the unit.
Step 11
Carefully disconnect the clear tube that connects the flux chamber to the outside wall of the overflow reservoir. Drain any remaining flux from this tube. Replace the cover.
Step 12
Replace the rear check-valve filter by disconnecting the tubing from both ends and connecting the new filter.
Step 13
Disconnect the tubing from the base of the handpiece. Unscrew the base of the handpiece at the black O-ring. Tap out the gray sintered metal check-valve filter and clean it in an ultrasonic or steam cleaner. Reinstall the filter in the handle.
Step 14
Replace dryer filter material, taking care to pack it firmly, but not tightly. Check the inside gasket on the cap for cracks or tears. Replace if necessary.
Step 15
Refill flux chamber to the halfway mark between minimum and maximum. Check the inside gasket on the cap for cracks or tears. Replace if necessary.
Step 16
Using the plastic funnel, slowly fill the distilled water chamber with fresh electrolyte solution. Check the inside gasket on the cap for cracks or tears. Replace if necessary.
Step 17
Follow the instructions in your handbook (set-up and use sections) to resume using your Hydroflux welding machine.
